The nonenzymatic decomposition of 5-methylbarbituric acid.

Studies with Mycobacterium and Corynebacterium, which metabolize pyrimidines via the oxidative pathway (l-5), have revealed that the first product of thymine catabolism is 5-methylbarbituric acid. The metabolic fate of 5-methylbarbituric acid remains to be elucidated. Work in this laboratory has shown that 5-methylbarbituric acid supports growth of Corynebacterium and is rapidly metabolized by ...

The nonenzymatic preparation in solution of N-(5'-phosphoribosyl) anthranilic acid, an intermediate in tryptophan biosynthesis.

Yanofsky (1) originally proposed N-(5’-phosphoribosyl)anthranilic acid as the first intermediate after anthranilic acid in tryptophan biosynthesis in microorganisms. Evidence was subsequently found which suggested that this compound is formed enzymatically from anthranilic acid and ribosylpyrophosphate 5-phosphate (2, 3). Although the dephosphorylated form of PRA,’ N-ribosylanthranilic acid, ha...

Vanadium Catalysis in the Nonenzymatic Transamination of 8-Aminolevulinic Acid

By nonenzymatic model reactions, the influence o f vanadium (V 0 2+, V 0 3~) and other metal ions (A l3+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, N i2+, Cr3+) on the transamination of 4,5-dioxovaleric acid (D O VA) with L-alanine (A la ) to 6 -aminolevulinic acid (<5-ALA) and pyruvic acid (P A ) with pyridoxal phosphate (P L P ) is investigated. The examinations o f the partial reactions show that V 0 2+, V 0 3~ and...

Nonenzymatic formation of guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate from guanosine triphosphate.

We observed the nonenzymatic formation of guanosine 3’:5’-monophosphate (cyclic GMP) from GTP. The reaction was dependent upon heat and was accelerated by divalent cations and creatine phosphate. The formation of cyclic GMP was greater with increased incubation time, temperature, GTP concentration, and pH. All of the divalent cations tested (Mg2+, Mnz+, Ca2+, Ba2+, and Znzf) increased cyclic GM...
